We’d love to tell you a story of how The Audit Toolbar was a light bulb moment and a pile of profit. But the road was less 4-lane motorway and more winding mountain-pass.
The Auditor
Christiaan Coetzee is an auditor and a technologist. South African born, raised and qualified.
It’s a little less than a decade since he packed his belongings and headed to London to earn his living doing technical audit work.
Once upon a template
Fast forward to April 2021 in Ealing, London, and Christiaan is on a client site auditing. He’s told he needs to use an up to date template from his firm’s intranet.
His login failed. Security failed. The account was corrupted. A morning wasted wrestling with technology.
When he finally got access to a jumble of hundreds of documents, he took an age to sift through them before he found what he was looking for. It was exactly the same template as he’d been using all along 😡😡
On his way out of the door, his last words were “Fuck this. There’s got to be a better way”.
That evening he started coding what was to become The Audit Toolbar.
The Entrepreneur
Piers Mummery is a business builder, black belt, third dan. He’s also an executive coach whose path crossed Christiaan’s on LinkedIn in June 2022.
As their coaching relationship grew, so did their belief that there was something in this. They both thought it, but Christiaan popped the question on 6 June 2023.
The Dream Team
Christiaan and Piers wasted no time in dropping their foot to the floor, finishing the product, and putting some commercial wellie behind it.
Over 1,000 auditors using the product in Africa later, they caught the eye of a group of some of the most prestigious seed investors writing cheques in London today.
Goodbye bootstrapping. Hello seed investment and a fully funded business plan. Hello Team, and hello expansion into Europe.
The rest, as they say, is a plugin that lives in Excel and automates and simplifies all the repetitive tasks that take so long in an audit.
